Our mission is to provide an easy-to-use tool that allows people to communicate securely and anonymously. We operate according to the following principles:
You should not be forced to associate any aspect of your real-world identity, such as your phone number, email address or IP addresses, to use Tungsten.
You should be able to assume multiple identities at the same time while making sure to fully isolate those identities from each other.
We will do everything in our power to satisfy these requirements, for example by:
Using independently audited end-to-end encryption for all conversations and as much metadata as possible
Locating our servers and business in jurisdictions which provide high privacy protection
Making Tor a first-class concept in Tungsten (and not just an afterthought)
Minimizing the time data is retained in general
Note: This policy applies only when you install and register via one of our applications (currently in private beta).
Information we collect Certain information (e.g. a recipient’s identifier, an encrypted message body, etc.) is transmitted to our servers solely for the purpose of delivering the expected application functionality (e.g. delivering messages). Unless otherwise stated below, this information is only kept as long as necessary to perform the task, and is not used for any other purpose. Tungsten also allows you to easily delete your profile via the app, which is part of users 'right to erasure'. In case you are having any difficulties doing so or if you have any other questions regarding your data, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org for help.
Information that is stored persistently on the backend:
Phone numbers or other identifiers you provide during sign-up
Hashed password credentials
Random authentication tokens
Conversation name and avatar*
* conversation metadata will not be persisted on backend in future releases
Information that is stored only as long as needed, and then deleted:
Address book Information from your device (in hashed format) is used to match you to people you might know on Tungsten.
Encrypted messages are kept on our servers until they are delivered to all devices. We have to temporarily store data on a server in order to make asynchronous communication possible.
We want to be a viable, independent company with a user-supported business model. We believe that selling user data puts the interest of corporations before the interest of users, so we will never sell your data.
In the future, when visiting our website, we might use visitor cookies and collect usage data. Cookies can be removed by using mechanisms built into your web browser.
